DIRECTIONS: Watch Kumaravadivelu´s talk on “English Language Teacher Education”, and make
and post in your personal blog a mind map of the KARDS model.
DIRECTIONS:
In addition to designing the mind map about the KARDS model, answer the
following reflective and critical questions
1. How would you keep the lamp burning?
2. What criticism would you make to the KARDS model?
It seems to me that the "fuel" to keep the lamp burning is innovation. We as teachers are always looking for " what is the best way to teach X or Y aspect? Hence, that constantly search for better practices; represents the vehicle that leads us to explore, implement, improve, ask and try "new ways to teach". By doing so, We will keep that lamp burning and we will light some other lamps ( teachers- students)
ReplyDeleteWith regard to the second question, It called my attention that Kumaravadivelu dismissed the critic about his model as a desirable model rather than a doable model. A desirable model takes for granted that in the target context all the conditions are perfect. And, we as teachers know it is really difficult to find a perfect context for teaching. that is why we are always changing and modifying our practices. Hence, that model represents for me an ideal model that can be achieved step by step, bearing in mind all the implications involved in the teaching process.

ReplyDeleteAs stated by Kumaravadivelu (2013, see video) we can keep the lamp burning by getting involved in an ongoing learning, reflecting and innovating process. We have to keep our own learning process if we want to teach.
ReplyDeleteThe KARDS model is an interesting approach for teacher education, however it can only take place if every single stage is connected, and to do so, educational policies in general need to have a shift towards critical pedagogy as a mean to tranform reality.
